Personal situation
Sofija Nikolajević was born in Dubrovnik in 1836. Her father, Đorđe Nikolajević, was a priest and a writer. She finished primary school in Dubrovnik. She started the Girls' School in Dubrovnik right after it was founded in 1847. She had an older brother, Čedomilj, who got a position in Vienna after he finished his studies thanks to Vuk Karadžić. However, when he became ill, he had to return to Dubrovnik in 1849, where the young Sofija took care of him. Čedomilj died on February 2, 1850. Not even four months after his death, on May 30, Sofija died suddenly. She was fourteen. It is not known whether she died from an epidemic or from mourning her brother.

Professional situation
Sofija Nikolajević wrote the poem "Nadgrobni venac" ("Funeral Wreath"), which she dedicated to her early departed brother Čedomilj. Aside from her verses, the poem includes the verses of Čedomilj's friends.
