Personal situation

Sofija Koča was born in Osijek in a Serbian family. She married a tax clerk Aleksandar Koča. She lived with her husband and children in Osijek, Karlovac, Irig, and Vinkovci. Her husband abandoned her in 1906, so she continued to take care of her seven children on her own. She died in Zemun in 1942.

Professional situation

Aside from writing prose, which she published on her own, Sofija Koča was a private German teacher and a nurse. Her missionary work is especially significant: she collected contributions for the construction of the Orthodox church in Rojče, Slovenia.
